Kennington Does anyone remember?

We lived at No 2 Paisley Road, my Mother was a Massaro. My Greatgrandfather was known locally as Jack but was an Italian who sold ice cream from a barrow around Manor Place etc. I loved Morris's Sweet Shop on Manor Place. He was the nicest person and I often wondered whatever became of him. My sister was Maureen Massaro and we are related to the Johnsons and Harmers of East Lane. I started school at Keyworth in 1956. Did anyone else? Am seeking my cousin Rosa Wilkinson - last heard of in Peckham - would be about 61 now.

Micky
We were obviously at the same School at, I would guess, the same time. Tanners, Teddy Bell and Charlie White certainly sound familiar. Mrs Edwards sounds familiar but I seem to think of her as a Music teacher rather than Head. I do remember a Miss Donna probably the reception Class, around 1953, she has left a lasting impression on me and I am now 63. The name is Michael Coumas and lived in Brutus Court from the time it was built (1956 I think) until 1971/2 and mother finaly vacated totally in 2009 following my father passing away in 2008.

Kennington Michael Coumas, I remember you

Hi Michael, it's Charlie Richardson here, you'd probably remember my big brother, Jim Richardson, better. We lived in Dumain Court, just next to Brutus. Couple of things I remember ... one was when you climbed up on top of the advertising hoarding by Dante Road, trod on a rusty nail up there that went right into your foot and couldn't get down. I had to get the copper who directed traffic at Newington Butts to climb up and carry you down! And ... dunno if you want to be reminded of this, but I believe that you found a kid floating dead in the pool at Bedlam Park. You can write to me at  Mail-me  if you like. I'll tell Jim I've seen you on here. Also, you could have a look at the Facebook page, Kennington SE11. There's also pages for Walworth, Elephant and Castle, Camberwell, Lambeth Walk etc.

Kennington St Philips School Kennington

I went to St Philips School in the 30s, I have fond memories of my time there .The half day holiday we got on Empire day and the little straw crosses we made at Easter. I also recall the Scottish family who were ships engineers. I recall their son a giant of a lad strolling about in his kilt. The Ideal Cinema and the little old lady in her black shawl selling peanuts and wine gums. Hard times but we had stability

Kennington De Laune Street

I lived in De Laune Street from 1947 to 1973. Went to Henry Fawcett School and then Archbishop Tenison's at the Oval. Nothing but great memories even though we didn't have a bathroom (went to the publc baths in Lambeth Walk - a great experience), and our playgrounds were bombsites (the site of the old Kennington Theatre, which was hit during the war.)
I too remember going down to Bob White's (great to hear from the Whie family, by the way) and also to that little pub in Cleaver Square - the Prince of Wales - where we had some great evenings in the early 60s.

Was your School Stockwell Manor rather than Kennington Manor or is my memory too far faded into the mists of time. Like you, looking back, everyone was I guess desperatly poor but I would suggest honourable, ethical with a very strong sense of community and values seemingly lost today. And like you mention our childhoods were full, happy and carefree. I try to promote that into my grandchildren today, all children deserve the fun we had.
I only mention Stockwell Manor as a good friend of mine at the time, Alan Willoughby, went there and I am told he became an airline captain and I the opposite, a mixed gas diving superintendent - both opposite ends of the planet. Very strange.
All the best to you and yours.
