Post or Ask something here in 'Bermondsey' Bermondsey class of 66looking for people who went to bacon pages walk in 1966 contact Mail-me ,uk Post reply -->London Bermondsey mick 6 Jan BermondseyI lived in Tulip Place near Llewellyn Street Bermondsey many years ago 1940+ but for some unknown reason cannot find any thing about it - not even on any old maps. I still have an envelope addressed to my Dad with that address on. It just seems that it never existed for some unknown reason. If any one could help that would be lovely perhaps an old photo! Post reply -->London Bermondsey June Carey 31 Dec ^ Bermondsey hi JuneTulip Place ran alongside LLewelyn St(formerly New Church Street)to the East of it,was a fully paved Alley way that came out halfway down where the Public House was on the corner, just before Chambers wharf. As you probably know,LLewelyn St was totally destroyed by a Land mine, leaving only one house standing at the Jamaica road end.We were sheltering in Chambers Wharf Basement at the time, and the blast blew the Shelter Doors off. Some Wardens were watching it come down as they thought it was a Parachutist..I cant be sure of the casualties,as quite a lot of the families either went into Chambers Wharf or down to Chilslehurst Caves. Two of the survivors came to live with us in Major Road.A Mr and Mrs Dallison, who were in Chislehurst caves at the time of the incident. The only other point that may be of interest is that Llewelyn St and New Church Street were not in the same place,i think that LLewelyn street was positioned farther West to make the access to Chambers Wharf better, and Tulip Plac Post reply -->London Bermondsey Bill killick 1 Jan ^ Bermondsey inforstrada998@aol.comwould have been part of the old New Church street, used as a pedestrian walk way.Hope this helps.Billl..K Post reply -->London Bermondsey Bill killick 1 Jan ^ BermondseyHi Bill thank you for your reply - I know where Tulip Place was as most of my family lived there grandparents and cousins etc.- there was also a small factory near the bottom of Tulip Place where we all played as children, There was a small Alley off Tulip Place which had a little sweet shop and that ran through to Llewellyn Street where another family member lived right near chambers wharf. I just cannot understand why it is not so well known as so many people lived there also. Post reply -->London Bermondsey Pat Carey 29 Dec BermondseyI am trying to find out any information about my Grandfather, Robert Jeffery and his parents Robert and Lydia Jeffery who are listed as living at 1 Major Road in Bermondsey on his birth certificate dated 1922. They may have moved on or I have a feeling there may have been a pub in Major Road that my Great Grandfather may have worked at as he is listed as being a bar man. If anyone has any leads it would be hugely appreciated. Post reply -->London Bermondsey Sian 27 Dec ^ Bermondsey Major roadhello,i lived in Major Road Bermondsey..I was born there in 1933.No 1 would have been the house directly behind Rickwards the Dairy that was on the corner of Major Road and Jamaica Road. What i remember of No 1 is that it was empty until after the end of the War,and was then occupied by a family called Palmer. Also there isnt a Public House in major road, but the closest was a Pub called The Clarence,in Jamaica Road, which was one of the few pubs not on a Corner, about 50yds along jamaica road, now occupied by Bermondsey Station.Major Road was only a small road of 29 houses, one of which was destroyed by German Bombs in 1940.No 29,and remained a Bombed site. He had 2 brothers - John and Stan. Before that he lived in East Lane. His mother's maiden name was McCann and when he lived in East Lane his family shared a house with his Aunt - Chats Hannam. A bit of a long shot but does anybody have any knowledge of these families. My Dad remembers going to a Pie and Mash shop on the old Jamaica Road, but getting thrown out because he could only afford a bowl of soup and took his own bread!
