Thanks - I knew about St. Gabriels but I'll definitely give the other two a call.

Wanstead What will the Wonder turn into?

Somebody had to start one, so here it it.

You may be thinking 'What the?', so what will the Wonder of Woolies in Wanstead turn into?

Some are probably thinking it will be a Tesco's, but do we really need another convenience store, we already have Londis and Somerfiled (soon to be Co-Op) and also the smaller independent shops selling groceries, but do we need another, similiar to the coffee shops.

Could it be a WH Smith, but also may not as other shops nearby sell papers, but on the other hand they also sell Books and Music.

I would rather see more of a home and furniture shop selling affordable home furniture items rather than selling the expensive items which in the world of credit crunch most people may not afford.

What are your thought's. I also wonder if the possible trader who would move into the building previously Woolworths ever read local web entries, do you agree?

Wanstead

I've heard that it is a "done deal" that Tesco's will be moving in. A great shame as we really do not need another supermarket. A Wilkinsons would have been far better - there's nowhere in the high street now where you can buy, for example, haberdashery items.

I, for one, will not be setting foot in Tesco's. If everyone did the same and voted with their feet the chain would soon get the message and clear off. People, like they do at Starbucks, will go in there and no doubt complain when another independent trader goes under...

Wanstead Woolworth probably worse than Tesco

So it's Wonder of Woolies (funny how an unsuccessful chain was considered to be no threat to local business). Woolies used to sell newspapers and magazines, DIY stuff, children and babies clothes and toys and anything else it could at a discount, which must have initial killed off lots of local businesses and probably still harmed some that are still running. I think Tescos would probably be less of a threat as they sell the same things as Sommerfields. If you want cheaper vegetables or quality meat you will continue to go elsewhere. I know my new decision will be to go to either Sommerfields OR Tescos and go to the local fruit and veg store and butchers.

is tescos, in paper today

Wanstead So will it be Tesco

So we have seen in the paper that it could be Tesco's (depending on planning permission).

How will this affect Local Traders? Londis should be ok, the Grocers should be ok, but I think it will be Somerfield (AKA) Co-Op) that should worry.

The only benefit of Tesco would be Fresh bread, maybe Doughnuts. Possibly DVD's and more select of wine and beer.

Oh, and the chance of no having to go on a bust to shp at the Tesco in Leytonstone, queue for 3 weeks to buy 4 things and then get those wonderful Clubcard points that we all save up to but present at Xmas. (only joking but is it true...)

What i would also like to see is the local traders then do a Loyalty scheme for the customers who stay loyal to them, but will they. The only one that does any scheme is Boots, but are they moving too?

What are your views and comments.

Wanstead in Chains

Yes, I totally agree with your sentiments about Starbucks - I'm proud to say I've never gone in there!!! Unfortunately, I can't say the same for all the dim livestock who go in everyday and help destroy the independents.

However, is Tesco really a 'done deal'? We had this a few months ago when the old Woolwich shut down on the High Street. Then a rumour went round saying Tesco had taken over the Majestic building. Any hard facts???

Wanstead Sad

Labelling people livestock for frequenting places like Starbucks is a bit sad.
The reason people frequent places such as Starbucks is that they know basically what they will be getting (i.e. good coffee at a reasonable price). That is why there are so many of them around. It's all very well going local this and local that, but it is up to these independent places to provide a comparable or better product at a similar or better price. I'd say having a tescos would be good for Wanstead as they would only be competing with Sommerfields and since when did you ever do your shopping in Londis?

Wanstead - deluded to say the least!

'good coffee at a reasonable price' What? A cup of lukewarm, overmilked, weak coffee in a paper cup for three quid??? How much do you think they make on this??? Well, if you think that's value, you deserve what you get! But then, that's the problem isn't it. People like you just can't see the bigger picture. It's not just about the High Street, it's about the unethical and aggressive techniques Starbucks and Tesco use (maybe Starbuck's coffee wouldn't be so bad if they didn't actively block Fair Trade agreements). Also, the trading practices of Tesco. Where to start??? As a famous quote goes: 'A prediction for the future: Capitalism will continue to shaft stupid and lazy people. Neither group will complain'.

Starbucks coffee isn't proper coffee - go across the road to the Olive Branch to experience the real stuff.

Similarly Tesco meat is probably the worst I've tasted from a supermarket - they simply don't know how to hang it properly - I stopped going there many years ago

Post reply -->London Wanstead 7 Jan

^

Wanstead Stop talking rubbish

The bigger picture eh?
At least starbucks's coffee is now fairtrade, unlike Illy's (which they sell over the road in the Olive Tree)
Like your comment about how most people are 'stupid and lazy', while obviously you are above it all in your ivy tower.

Post reply -->London Wanstead OG 7 Jan

^

Wanstead - like I said, deluded to say the least

Ivy tower?

Guess what - the PR you read on the leaflets in Starbucks isn't completely true! (d'oh). Just a tiny bit of rudimentary research on the web will give you a true picture of what Starbucks really gets up to. But like I said, stupid and lazy people can't be bothered to find out. Also, if you can be bothered to drag yourself into the Olive Branch and read the menu, then you'll see a Fair Trade coffee is available. Now who's above it all?

Wanstead So who will replace Woolies

Sorry to reply back, but can we all stop bitching about Starbucks. If you read further on in this webpages, you will find already a discussion about Starbucks and their coffee.

This one is supposed to be about who will replace Woolworths.

My own reply to this would be to have either a WHSMith (depending if they are next to go bust) as it would be good to have some educational books for the children, music, games and papers), at least you can buy gift vouchers from them to give as presents whereas where else can you do that on this High Street. Or on the other hand lets move the Police Station there, so the High Street would feel more protective and stop the louts and beggars hanging around.

Wanstead Wanstead High St

I agree Starbucks is here to stay for the near future anyway and Tesco is a slight improvement on Somerfields.

I think the retail mix in the High St would be much improved with a new fishmonger, bookshop, italian deli and so forth.

I think the addition of a few select 'chains' and new independents would encourage people to shop more locally on their doorstep. Before I moved to Wanstead I used to shop in Muswell Hill at the weekends which has both chains and independents.

By chains I don't mean the KFC's and Nandos, Belgique is a good example which is doing a roaring trade since opening. The chains would generate more footfall in the 'independent' shops too which wouldn't be so bad.

Wanstead Part time nanny wanted

Professional couple living in Bushwood seek part time nanny to care for our 3 month old baby boy. This may be ideally suited to a mother who's children are at school, as we would like someone who would be available two days per week (preferably Tuesday and Thursday) between 9am and 2pm. This would be a sole charge position most of the time so experience with young babies is essential. Must also speak fluent English please. Wanstead Wanstead High School

You've probably done your research by now, but its a good (and steadily improving) school and has just received a glowing Ofsted report.

I attended the open evening late last year and applied for a place for my son. I've been involved in education (and secondary school management in particular) for several years and assure you that 2 years from now, it will be so oversubscribed that even applications from within the notional catchment area will not be guaranteed to be succesful. its clear to e that the manaqgement structure and practices put in place by the recently appointed head are starting to bear fruit.
It's very quickly developing into one of those rare gems - a state school, with a diverse intake, that produces excellent results.
Full details of the admissions criteria (and notional catchment area) on the Redbridge council website.

Wanstead Writing Group

Wanstead Writing Group is a group of likeminded people who enjoy writing and then meeting to read and discuss each others' work over a drink or two.

If you’d like to come to our next meeting on December 3rd. at 7-30pm, then please email me for details. There is a small writing exercise, up to 750 words, which you’re also welcome to try. However, there’s absolutely no pressure on you to do this – if you’d just like to come along and see what happens, then please do.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Wanstead Needed: room for couple in Wanstead, South Woodford, near

Hi,
we are looking for double room ( for 2 people, we are couple).

We don't smoke, don't make parties, very calm and clean.
We are looking for respectful houseshare/ flatshare in Wanstead, South Woodford, Snaresbrook and near.

The work is in Romford, so it takes more than 2 hours every day to go there (from the place we live now) and back. Get really tired of it.

Wanstead will be good, as we lived there before for more than 2 years and know this area very well and love it very much.

The budget is 80-100 pounds pw ( depends on condition of your property) and we want INCLUDING ALL BILLS.
Room should be large and we also need some kind of storage.

Ready to move by 27-28 November.

Thank you for your attention.
Please, landlords only, no agents!
