Stoke Newington StokeyHi, I saw a post on here from someone who made a comment about "new people" moving into Stoke Newington and calling it "Stokey". I was born in Stoke Newington 59 years ago and have always called in "Stokey". I got that from my father who is now 87. People called Stoke Newington "Stokey" when he was a child. It's not something which newcomers to the area have chosen to call it. :-) Lyn Rennick Post reply -->London Stoke Newington 10 Nov Should we remove this post ? ^ Stoke NewingtonMy mother, too ,is 87 and has lived in Stoke Newington all her life and has never called it 'Stokey'! It was always Stoke Newsington town hall, or Stoke Newington High Street. It's only in the last few years that I have seen the word Stokey, usually in the 'trendy' newspapers. I thought you had to live in Stoke-on-Trent to be a real Stokey! Stoke Newington sculpture outside stamford hill libraryi have put a posting in the Stamford Hill section which i must say is much more interesting than this one but thought i'd try here too as a I was actually a resident of Stoke Newington( not stokey as you newcomers like to call it). Anyway trying to find out who remembers the sculpture outside Stamford Hill library in the late 60s early 70s, my mother told me back then it was a Henry Moore( see that got the ears of you new residents pricked) but i'm sure it wasn't. i used to walk past it every day on my way to school and i can now find no reference to it anywhere Post reply -->London Stoke Newington Deb 14 May Should we remove this post ? Stoke Newington what about Stoke Newington?I lived there from 1950 and went to Fleetwood School. It was a great place for childhood, parks a little churchyard (corner of Evering Road and High Street) Coronation Buildings, where my aunt lived, was bombed during the war. The Ambassador Cinema, The Vogue later continental cinema was a little gem,I remember the picture club. Many houses were requistioned then split into 2 flats, but the trappings of what once must have been quite a solubrious area remained. I remember gents with trilbies, couples walking arm in arm, knock down ginger - Strakers, an old fashioned deli, greengrocer, hairdressers and a lovely china shop called Beavis. Dysons (was that a pre-runner to Sainsbury) was near the post office. It was Edwardian but on the cusp of the modern age, quite a few residents became celebrities. Stoke Newington had a quiet dignity,, it wasn't The Hill, nor was it Hackney; it had its own character. I'd love to hear other people's memories... Was it Stephens? Back in the 50s I went shopping with my mother most Saturday mornings to Stoke Newington High Street. It used to take half day! I remember a butchers just past Church Street that had the pneumatic cash system on wires above your head, and the Lyon's opposite where we went for tea and cakes. They 'hid' their hot meals behind rows of metal doors. Also, the Sainsbury's, opposite Brooke Road I think, where you queued up for butter (taken off a big lump with wooden paddals) cheese, sugar etc at different counters. Seems a million years ago. Great memories! Stephen Barry (ex Lynmouth Road) Post reply -->London Stoke Newington 22 Jan Should we remove this post ?
