Post or Ask something here in 'Stamford Hill' Stamford Hill Anyone from Skinners, 1959-1961?Hi, I was at Skinners in those years in the Vth form, just in time to take GCE. It was a difficult time for me but I have fond memories of the young women who went to Skinners'; of the Chabad house for kosher meals; the Regent Cinema; Egerton Road Shul, Springfield Park and Springfield Park Shul on the corner of Moresby and Upper Clapton Roads. I'm trying to find old photos of Oldhill street from that time or earlier, as well as hearing from any "Old Girls" who remember me, Madeleine Goldstein, the so-called "American." Stamford Hill The folks who lived on the Hill!I remember calling for friends after school (Fleetwood) and walking along Evering Road in the 1950s. Bayston, Darville, Leswen, walking over Stoke Newington Common - I believe there was a library nearby. There was a fruit shop called Daisy's in Rectory Road (I think.) and a Barber Shop called Jacks, and a Dr Weinstock. I'm going back a long way now. As a tiny child I'd go with my mother to Clissold Park, and once saw Annette Mills with Muffin the Mule, doing a childrens show there. I remember Stoke Newington and Stamford Hill as gentle places, although it suffered terrible damage during the Blitz. I was too young to remember that but Benthal Road was hit, where we were living at the time. Remember the man with long hair and cane who walked the streets of the East End and often Hackney and Stoke Newington? Stamford Hill was a terrific place, the E&A salt beef bar, the club, the lovely, little shops. People really got on well, all the barriers came down in Stamfrd Hill Post reply -->London Stamford Hill 7 Aug ^ Stamford HillReading your letter really jogged the old memories. I certainly do remember the long haired fellow with the cane striding along past Clapton Common in all weathers. I lived on Leadale Rd. from the mid. 50s into the 70s, went to Craven Park school. There was the sweet shop across the road, FH Roberts, I think we used to call it ' Chats '. Those were good days, & its been many yrs. since I've been there. Its probably changed a bit since then. I remember the places you mentioned, & some others which are coming back to me. The cinemas & bowling alley, the ' Shtip ', watching Spurs at the Lane on cold winter days. The Wimpy Bar for coffee. The list goes on. All the best to you. There was also the Ambassador cinema and the Vogue where I used to go to Saturday Morning picture club - anyone remember the exciting serial "Jungle Girl?" The steps of the Regent was quite a meeting place but the Super is a bit of a dim memory now? Way back, I remember a lovely China shop called Beavis where my aunt worked. From the LCC flats on the hill to Stoke Newington (Fleetwood School, Mr Giles, Mr Bright-thomas and then headmaster Mr Freeman) and then on to Dalston was basically "my manor." I had friends from everywhere, Bayston, Darville, Evering, Cazenove, Kyverdale, Grandma lived in Cheviot House on the Hill, friends in Homleigh Road, etc., the list is endless and the memories quite overwhelming. The Egg Stores, Yettas Dresses, a coffee bar on the hill, the Stamford Hill Club, older generations sitting on the seats on the Hill. Post war 50s was an interesting time, Stamford Hill was warm and homley, nice place to remember! I remember the roads so wide it was hard to throw a ball accross from one side to the other (at 8 it realy was).I attended for a brief period St Thomas Primery school and then moved to the brand new Tyson school in Old Hill Street.Having failed my 11+ Miss Hasenger the Head Mistress of Tyson got me a place in the Technical school Joseph Priestly in Homerton. I recently returned to My old Childhood haunts, only to find they had, in my absence moved the houses closer to one and other.so that even an old man (me) could throw a ball Mail-me Post reply -->London Stamford Hill Laurence 19 Nov ^ Stamford Hill Stamford Hill 41--56 I lived in Leadale rd all that time and we really used to enjoy ourselves No rowdiness like today a crowd used to stand opposite the Regent every wekend in the evenings just talking and laughing and it was SAFE I went to Craven Park rd school during the war and Miss Logan was the teacher . I remember all the places you have mentioned up the hill, as we called it. I remember Zip the cleaners and the off licence at the corner of Craven Park Road. We used to have the Dr Cronin surgery between Rostrevor Ave and Craven Park Road in its own detached house. There was also Corona Lemonade company opposite on the High Road, the depot delivered locally, all those tall bottles with the special stoppers! Before The Guiness Trust flats were built, it used to be the "bombed buildings" where we played as children. We played in Springfield Park and also Clapton Pond where we could feed ducks. We caught the 653 bus on the hill to Manor House tube station when we wanted to go "up west." Also famous on the High Road near Olinda Road was the smallest barber shop in London. It even appeared on tv in the 1960's. Do these places and events sound familiar to anyone in the 55-65 Post reply -->London Stamford Hill Vivien 22 Oct ^ Stamford Hill^ Stamford Hill Yes I remember all what you stated Stamford HillYes I am from your era 55-65 I live In Stamford Hill On Clapton common went to school at Cravern Park, and Woodbery Down in Manor House.
