Poplar POPLAR STABLES

Bobby and Renie Green (the salad stall outside the pub - was it the ?Festive of Britain?) used to boil their beetroots to be sold on their stall in their lockup. Lovely hot beetroot, wrapped in newspaper to peel and eat as I went round the market with my mum.
George the wet fishmonger stall (live eel) was just by them.
The road is still there (I think it may be Willis Street), but where the lock ups were gives way to one side of the now car park.

Poplar GOUGH GROVE POPLAR

I cant access the full post regarding Gough Grove in Poplar. In lived in Gough Grove as a child, the Waterloo Arms was slap bang in the middle of our road. What I remember about it was the 'off licence' which sold sweets from the 'penny box'. Where another road intercepted Gough Grove opposite the pub (into Canton Street) we could make four 'posts' from the street corners and telegraph poles etc for playing rounders. All us kids would congregate there to play. I lived down the bottom end of Gough Grove close to Saracen Street.

Would love to have contact with someone from there. Happy memories and some sad ones too. As the years advance it would be wonderful to reminisce those special years.

Poplar BAG WASH

My mother worked there too. Around 1950. She brought me home printed hankerchiefs I'd never had the likes of, that had 'fallen' from the wash. It was not far from Spratts pet food factory, where Crisp Street suddenly became Violet Rd leading down to Bow. I went to Culloden School.

Poplar The Bag Wash, Poplar

The Bag Wash, or laundry was on the east side of Chrisp Street, between the Carmen Street bridge (the old wooden bridge) and Cording Street. It was possibly on the site of what on an 1893-96 map shows as 'Sack Works' I went to Susan Lawrence School from 1952-1958.
