Plumstead Travel book club

Hi, I have decided to start a book club with a twist. Each month we will look at fictional books that revolve around a particular country (The kite runner, thousand splendid suns, motorcycle diaries etc etc). When we meet, the evening will be themed around the country the book is based in. So if we were reading a story based in Cuba we might drink mojitos, if we read a story based in Spain we could eat tapas. Am open to suggestions in terms of how and where this group might run.  Mail-me

Plumstead

Why do we have to have a Tesco in SE18?

I was always so pleased that we were one of the few postcodes who did not have Tesco.

I have only once shopped in Tesco in my life. Never again!!

If we must have another supermarket why can't we have Waitrose?
From Waitroses' point of view, why would they want to come here? It's far too down market.
Maybe that will change, but I won't hold my breath.

Plumstead Tesco

I can see only one winner with the mega Tesco in Woolwich and that will be Tesco to the detriment of all others. I think it will suck even more life from the market and high street and from the shops in Plumstead and Thamesmead.

Greenwich Council do not have a great record when it comes to regeneration in the area. The Royal Arsenal site seems OK because Berkeley seem to have almost full control down there. Where the council have had projects with other developers such as in the centre of Woolwich and Thamesmead there have been massive problems.

Plumstead Herbert Road cafe

anyone know what that 'hosgood' shop is going to be? i'm really hoping a health food shop / deli / cafe. I think Herbert Road could be a good area to regenerate. That UK bakeries could do with a shake up and some competition

Plumstead ChristChurch Primary school

Christchurch on Shooters Hill Road seems like a really nice primary school, and has good reports. is it difficult to get into?
does anyone have any experience of it?

Plumstead

You wont get a child in unless you live in the immediate catchment area it is the most popular school in the area and people move house to go there ( dont ask me why I think it is the worst form of snobbery- it only then serves the middle classes who can afford to live in the area and who subsequently all send their kids there , thus it's excellent standards as they do not have any problem families ). You may stand a vague chance if you are regular church goers and also live in the area. Good luck .

Plumstead All manner of building/decorating/plumbing etc

I have recently used Aspect Maintenance for works on my house. They are a very reputable firm and really nice people. Their prices are reasonable and they are reliable. You could probably get some cheaper quotes elsewhere put builders in london are always a bit hit and miss, but these guys are top notch and very professional.

Plumstead How is the area for a new mum?

Hello! We're thinking of buying a house on Ancona Rd near the Common with my husband as we are expecting a baby soon and we need more space. From our visit to Plumstead I found that there are not many places to go to for a coffee etc., especially with a baby. Any ideas/advice? I've been reading about the lack of coffe shops in the area, are there any other options for mums & babies to meet other mums and socialise?

Plumstead mums and babies groups

hi vicky
I'm a new plumstead mum. there's a really nice baby group in Eltham on wednesday mornings, at the United Reform Church on Court road. Its very laid back ,and there are some breastfeeding experts on hand for advice which is really helpful in the first few months. Its really supportive and great from a social point of view too.
Also all the local libraries have baby rhyme times which are fab. I go to the one at Blackheath standard, but they are also at Plumstead, the slade, woolwich and charlton libraries.
Greenwich is good too - there's the mums and babies screening at the picture house cinema and also running mummies pushchair keep fit in greenwich park or dansons park.
Lots of walks on the common and in Oxleas Woods and theres a lovely farm next door to the garden centre on the way to Welling which is lovely for when they are a bit older. There are always events such as lambing and chicks hatching.

Plumstead

Blimey, comedy on the Common! Would love to know where it is as I haven't heard of it.
Unfortunately I'm not aware of any health shops on Plumstead High Street, just rows and rows of fast food shops and stores!Better off going to Welling,Blackheath or Greenwich.
There is loads of potential for both Winn's and Plumstead Common and a cafe would be really good, especially in the Summer. I think there would be a huge demand for it as it has been mentioned on this forum before. If anyone has some spare cash to set up a cafe (!) it would make a mint. I've heard the Old Mill Pub is friendly and we hope to check it out when it gets warmer.

Plumstead hello welcome to plumstead.

i feel like i am the resident killjoy! This is not hampstead, blackheath, putney or greenwich. this is plumstead and woolwich. we are the minority this is daily mirror reading land. You (or eveyone on here including me) may want a coffee in a little cafe or watch theatre on the common but it isn't suddenly going to happen unless of course you personally make it happen because we are still the minority. we will all come if you do! if you want a cafe opened by the common the best person to tell is the bloke who own the excellent little cafe called "friends" behind sainsburys in woolwich - it is exactly the kind of cafe we want by plumstead common or in herbert road - homeade italian food and fryups, excellent coffee and a nice atmostphere/decor. I am going to speak to him too. we all need to! let me know if my explanation of where "friends" is , is not clear enough.
