One name eludes me, I understand he may have been the manager and was named 'Jack'. I'm told he lived in Morden but cannot find his surname. If any of your readers have information, memories or photos they can share I would be so pleased. Many thanks. ^ PeckhamHello. I used to attend Friern School for girls opposite Peckham Rye Park. I had some happy times there. My mother sent me there as she didn't want me to attend Peckham Comprehensive (where all my mates went). She persuaded me with tales of how I would attend horseriding classes at the school and Sailing classes. During my time there I never saw a boat or a horse. My headmistress was Miss Pringle and my maths teacher Miss Coin. We had some interesting 'conversations'. It seems I got a little snooty about attending such a 'posh' school to the extent that my father threatened to take me to school in our neighbours (rag and bone man) horse and cart! I attended about 1967/68 for 3 years. My name is Denis Gardner and in 1940 I lived in Brayards Road and was at school in Peckham central Choumert Road, The school closed at the start of the war and the National fire brigade took over the building. Before starting work at H.W.Sullivans ,Old Kent Road in January 1941, I was doing a paper round from a shop on the corner of Lugard Road when I was injured in an air raid in Caulfield Road on the 15th October 1940 and was an outpatient at St. Giles hospital till the 11th November, the hospital on that morning of the 15th was full of young girls from a food factory that had been hit in Camberwell. In 1944 I joined the RAF. Demobbed in December 1947 I worked at Stanley Coachworks in Queen street until I migrated to Australia in 1951. my home for the past 58 years. Our Saturday night out was tyher cinema, be it The Tower, Tower Annexe, Odeon or Gaumont. Then to the fish & chips or Pie and Mash shop. We are looking for two other families with young children to get together and rent a house. We have one son who will be 3yrs old in May. We would like to experience living in a co-operative, communal environment, benefitting everyone involved: -children can play together and learn from each other -parents can share skills and childcare -bigger living space and garden -more economical consumption The idea is to rent a 6 or 7 bedroom house so that everyone can have their own space while also having communal areas. Ideally, we would like to live in Brockley/New Cross but we are flexible. This is clearly a long-term plan as we would have to get to know one another and discuss our expectations, so we are in no hurry to move and everything would be very informal to begin with. If you are interested please email Mail-me Post reply -->London Peckham Ruby 11 Feb |
