Peckham William Hill and son Car showroom

Hi does anyone know what happened to William hill & son car showroom it was opposite Queens Road police station Me and a friend where in and out of there a lot as kids.
I lived right above it in Lambrook house and would spend Saturdays cleaning the cars and smoking fags. This would have been in the 70s 80s.
I know Chris Hill lived in Brockley and had another showroom in Anerley.
He also had some lovely custom cars and would often go to the Chelsea cruise.
Peckham was a great place to grow up I moved there in the 60s and left 18 years ago went to John Donne school 69 to 74 ish. Clifton Estate was great.
Any help be very greatful.
Or just old Peckham chat to

Peckham Wilson

The fair was called Wilsons Rendezvous, owned by William Wilson who died in 1951. ( Info. from The Story of Peckham & Nunhead by John D Beasley). I used to live in Whorlton Road No.2a and the big wheel was behind our yard. The L.C.C. bought the land and built Creed house and our view of the common and pond was spoilt forever. No pictures, sorry.

Peckham Does anyone remember Jones and Higgins

I remember going to Peckham in the 1970s and i loved Jones and Higgins department store. The name was changed in the 80s to Houndsditch warehouse.

Peckham Jones and Higgins

I remember Jones and Higgins in Rye Lane from the fifties I don't live in London now and did'nt realize they no longer existed. I had an uncle who lived in Albany Road just off the Old Kent Road and I can remember as a kid playing by the old canal at the rear of the houses in Albany Road, I suppose that's all changed as well.

I used to work in J&H in the hardware dept. I must have been about 15 years old. I also attended Peckham Girls School and remember having a huge crush on the guy who worked in the record shop in Peckham - I think his name was 'Harry'. Great memories. I now live in New York.

Peckham Jones higgins

Yes Unfortunately, Peckham high street and Albany road would unrecognisable if you have not been there for years.
I was born in Camberwell and went to School on Albany road and all those places i knew in 1970s have gone. My school as been turned into luxury flats.

Peckham Haywards Pickle Factory Bird In Bush Road

Hi There
I'm wondering if anyone out there worked at Haywards Pickle Factory at Bird in bush road, Peckham in 1971 / 1972.
Or if anyone knows of anyone called Antony who worked there at this time. I'm not sure of his surname but he lived in Pomeroy Street New Cross?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Peckham Re: Peckham is improving

Ana, I agree

Peckham is getting better and better.
My favourite part is Peckham Rye, with the Rye Park at the back. It even has japanese garden and a lake with ducks!
It's great for bikes.

and I also love the Rye hotel and it's wonderful food!

Peckham peckham is improving

I was amazed at how quickly Peckham has improved in the last three years.

Whenever I said I was living in Peckham people would say! Really? What are you doing there it is very dangerous! Be careful.
But the truth is that since I moved here in 2004 I've never had a single problem nor have I seen anything different from any other areas.

Maybe it is because I live in the nice part of Peckham near Queens Road, where they are renovating the area. Southwark has removed the old massive council state buildings and new flats have been built instead.

Every day I find something new, new neighbours, new shops, new arrangements at the train station...

I thought I would be living here in Peckham temporally until I could afford to move to the north but after four years I am now thinking on buying here instead!

Peckham St Mary Magdelene School

The school is still there as is the Hooper Hall albeit slightly changed.Peckham Girls is now called Warwick Park I believe and has con-joined with Peckham Boys School (Peckham Manor) I attended both these schools during the 60's.

Peckham

I also went to Peckham Girls School in the late 60's is it still there ? It was very modern in its time and had excellent facilities. I now live in Sussex and don't get up to London all that ofter now, it would be good to know its still there.

Post reply -->London Peckham Barbara 1 Sep

^

Peckham What happened to Peckahm Girls

Well the building is still there plus or minus a few additions.
However after 1983, Southwark amagamated all the local secondary schools. Eg Closing Silverthorne secondary and Thomas Carlton. Then all the student were moved to the Peckham girls and Peckham Manor sites. Then they changed the name to Warrick Park secondary.
