( Info. from The Story of Peckham & Nunhead by John D Beasley). I used to live in Whorlton Road No.2a and the big wheel was behind our yard. The L.C.C. bought the land and built Creed house and our view of the common and pond was spoilt forever. No pictures, sorry. Post reply -->London Peckham B. Post reply -->London Peckham kristeltips66 9 Oct Peckham Does anyone remember Jones and HigginsI remember going to Peckham in the 1970s and i loved Jones and Higgins department store. The name was changed in the 80s to Houndsditch warehouse. Post reply -->London Peckham kristeltips66 9 Oct ^ Peckham Jones and HigginsI remember Jones and Higgins in Rye Lane from the fifties I don't live in London now and did'nt realize they no longer existed. I had an uncle who lived in Albany Road just off the Old Kent Road and I can remember as a kid playing by the old canal at the rear of the houses in Albany Road, I suppose that's all changed as well. Post reply -->London Peckham brian 9 Oct ^ PeckhamI used to work in J&H in the hardware dept. I must have been about 15 years old. I also attended Peckham Girls School and remember having a huge crush on the guy who worked in the record shop in Peckham - I think his name was 'Harry'. Great memories. I now live in New York. Post reply -->London Peckham UKshasha 27 Dec ^ Peckham Jones higginsYes Unfortunately, Peckham high street and Albany road would unrecognisable if you have not been there for years. I was born in Camberwell and went to School on Albany road and all those places i knew in 1970s have gone. My school as been turned into luxury flats. My favourite part is Peckham Rye, with the Rye Park at the back. It even has japanese garden and a lake with ducks! It's great for bikes. and I also love the Rye hotel and it's wonderful food! Post reply -->London Peckham Peter 20 May Peckham peckham is improvingI was amazed at how quickly Peckham has improved in the last three years. Whenever I said I was living in Peckham people would say! Really? What are you doing there it is very dangerous! Be careful. But the truth is that since I moved here in 2004 I've never had a single problem nor have I seen anything different from any other areas. Maybe it is because I live in the nice part of Peckham near Queens Road, where they are renovating the area. Southwark has removed the old massive council state buildings and new flats have been built instead. Every day I find something new, new neighbours, new shops, new arrangements at the train station... I thought I would be living here in Peckham temporally until I could afford to move to the north but after four years I am now thinking on buying here instead! Post reply -->London Peckham Barbara 1 Sep ^ Peckham What happened to Peckahm GirlsWell the building is still there plus or minus a few additions.
