Nunhead nunhead to kent

back before family holidays abroad,in the 1950s there was not a lot of money about ,to take the kids and family on holidays,so in the six weeks school holidays, what did most families do ,they packed up there pots, pans, bedding ect,and shoved it all on trucks, vans, lorries, trains, or any form of transport they could find, and head off from nunhead, Peckham, and all over London,to the hop fields of kent,it was a great way to have a break from London, and earn some bear money,on the hop farms the farmer provided tin huts, and work to pick his hops, all the family mucked in pulling the vines down, and picking off the hop heads into the canvas troffs, each bushel picked, was money for the family, food was cooked on open fires ,metal grids and little ovens, you wore your cloathes for a week, till sunday, that was wash day,and washed your self in a bowl,or small iron bath, the kids went scrumping for fruit, and the parents went to the local boozer,,there were people from all over London having sing songs

Nunhead Nunhead in the 1940s

Hi, I'm looking to trace any info on my grandmother who lived in Nunhead from 1948 onwards . She lived there most of her married life so I figure someone would know her and her husband / family. Her name was Harriet Rose Banks. She lived at 34 Nunhead Grove in 1948 with her husband James banks. They did have 2 kids in the 1950's named Jennifer and Ray. Any info on my grandmother at the time would be most appreciated. I'm collecting a family history from my mothers side of the family. Contact me at  Mail-me

The council wasn't very fair to some of the long term shop tenants a few years ago, doubling the rent and wanting fully repairing leases (£60k just for repairs!) then having scared them off, they sold the properties (having refused over the years, to sell to the existing tenants or do the necessary repairs !!)

Nunhead nunhead , the early years

I was born in 1939,and lived at 5 barest road, nunhead, after the 2nd world war in nunhead, things were tight for everyone, our house had no bathroom{we used a bungalow bath, kept outside on a nail on the fence}we had no inside toilet,we used the only one ,in the garden,no heating, torn up news paper, and poor lighting,we had no washing machine, only a water boiler, mum used a scrubbing board,a mangle in the garden,we had an ascot water heater,no fridge,we had a coal fire,no tv,and put overcoats on our beds to keep warm,my dad was in the army, and when the bombing came, we had to sleep in an Andersen shelter in the garden,we all got nits, mum used to work at the laundry in gorden road,my sisters and I had jobs by the time we were 14,to help out, beside going to school,we were not the only family that lived like that in those days,in the 50s in nunhead it was do not have, now days its must have, most people must have the latest gadgets, how we all have changed,?????

Hi,
I have been searching online for bits and bobs related to my family history and when I came across this, the name's rang a bell in my head. My Nan was best friends with your sister Kathy as she lived on Barset Rd too, along with my grandad and all their children (my mother included). They later moved to Beer & Wine, which is the home I remember my grandparents in and remember Kathy from when she would come round to do my Nan's hair still in the 90s!

My Nan was called Alice Harrison (Hodges) married to Donald and their children were: Jean, Pat, Eileen, Richard, Christine (My mum) and Martin.
