I lived in Dursley Road from 1948 to 1989. I worked 1964 at Military Branch Books to the left of Kidbrooke Station for 4 years then at the Admiralty in London. The RAF Kidbrooke site right of Kidrooke Tunnel was No1 Barrage Balloon Site during WW2. Later I believe a Maintenance Unit. Now Thomas Tallis school. The MOD Air Publications and Forms Store was to the left of tunnel. Later a Royal Mail Depot. APFS also on other (south) side of road. APFS/Royal Mail sites now Ferrier Estate. APFS had steam later diesel locos I believe on standard gauge and the sites were joined by a bridge under the main road. RAF Loco 111 Aldwyth now at Leeds Industrial Museum or Yaxham(?) I went to Kidbrooke Primary then Charlton Manor. I too awaited the Queen and did not see her. Open or closed top car? Can't remember and it really doesn't matter does it? Last Bus from Bexleyheath is around 00.20 hours and the last bus from North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) back towards Bexleyheath is just after 01.00 hours. So will benefit many people and will ensure people can get home quickly and safely after a night out. I attended this particular school from 1955 till 1960. During this period I was a prefect; played goalkeeper and full-back for the football team. I frequently see one of the girls who was in the year below mine as she is a nurse at the NBS where I donate blood. In my class was a pretty girl named Kay Thatcher. There was two sisters in the school with the surname of Page - the first name of one of them was Gwen. Audrey Smith, another pretty girl, was in the year or two lower than me. I don't think the girls would like you calling them boys; or can't you tell the difference? ^ Kidbrooke^ Kidbrooke^ KidbrookeKidbrooke RAF KIDBROOKEOn Sept. 10th, 08 the RAF Linguists' Association are siting a plaque at the Kidbrooke SE Station to mark the presence of the Joint Services Schoolo for Linguists at the former RAF Kidbrooke. I'd be grateful for any info. on the RAF Station, where exactly it was located etc. I understand that it is now a housing estate which is shortly to be demolished. Does anyone remember the Camp? Or perhaps someone worked there. e-mail: Mail-me . RAF Kidbrooke which I was led to believe was a supply depot stood on the site of what is now the Thomas Tallis school - the depot did NOT stand on any housing estates as they were located opposite. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Chris Miller 14 Apr ^ Kidbrooke JSSL^ Kidbrooke RAF KIdbrookeRAF Kidbrooke. I lived in Kidbrooke prefabs from 1945 until 1961 being among those first moved on after the 1958 Great Storm and flood. I don’t know when the Kidbrooke airbase was first run down but it must have been very shortly after WW2 and it was rapid. When the base closed there was considerable equipment abandoned and hordes of local males descended on the site to “liberate” what ever was left. My late Father’s share was a large wooden bench which served us well until the bitter winter of 1963. To the best of my recollection the airbase was where the supermarket now stands. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke terakunene@yahoo.co.uk 21 Oct ^ Kidbrooke Route 132 to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena)It is good news that route 132 Bexleyheath - Bexley - Eltham Station is to be extended to North Greenwich Station and the 02 Arena via Kidbrooke Rochester Way, Sun In The Sands, A102 to Woolwich Road, Greenwich Peninsula (Sainsburys & Filmworks Cinema), North Greenwich Station (Jubilee Line) and the 02 Arena. The route is due to be extended from January 2009. But we are asking TFL and East Thames Buses who operate route 132 to consider extending the route from 31st December 2008 (New Years Eve) to coincide with New Year Celebrations at the 02 Arena and to take passengers to and from North Greenwich Station (Jubilee Line) for people travelling to and from new year celebrations in Central London. This is great news for the people of Kidbrooke who are normally negelected when it comes to public transport and indeed bus services. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Julian Russell 18 Oct ^ Kidbrooke RAF KidbrookeI was in the RAF and stationed at RAF Kidbrooke from June 1961 until June 1965. I was on No 4 MT Squadron which was motor transport There was a detachment at Woolwich Arsenal which was a storage depot for `boat boxes` belonging to Service families going to overseas postings. These were transported to the London Docks e.g. Royal Albert and Victoria - West Indies dock - King George V dock - Wapping Basin - St. Georges Wharf etc: I spent most of my time at Woolwich Arsenal but lived local in Deptford so was not billeted on camp. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke colin gray 25 Jun ^ Kidbrooke RAF KidbrookeTerrakunnene you have a faulty memory. RAF Kidbrooke stood on the site of the now Thomas Tallis School. I used to go past the depot en route to/from school and later to/from work in the late 1950s/early 1960s The site of the now supermarket stood on the site a Royal Mail depot which bracketed BR Kidbrooke and the Kidbrooke Park Road. On the south side of BR Kidbrooke, the Royal Mail depot backed on the River Quaggy which was the northern perimeter of Sutcliffe Park. On the west side of the Kidbrooke Park Road, a coal yard was sandwiched between the railway track and the Royal Mail Depot. Terra, if you are going to quote facts please get it right. I hope route 132 will be more frequent when the route is extended to North Greenwich Station. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Kim 25 Oct ^ Kidbrooke Route 132Yes it is good news for Kidbrooke that route 132 is being extended to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) via Greenwich Peninsula. I to hope the route is extended to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) as soon as possible. I also agree New Years Eve 2008 would be a good day for TFL/East Thames Buses to introduce the extension of route 132 to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena). Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Tom & Jo 25 Oct ^ Kidbrooke RAF KidbrookeI was posted to No. 4 MT Coy. RAF Kidbrooke in December 1951 till June 1953. Where the school stands now was the Station Headquarters and married quarters. to the left of the main entrance as you go in is the football field where there used to be the Guardroom, fire station, cookhouse and of course our billets. where the tennis courts are now was the vehicle hangar and behind that was the workshops.Accross the the road opposite where the supermarket now stands was the officers mess and towards the railway staion was there garages which I helped to erect. the camp boundary stretched along the pavement almost to the junction where the Dover Patrol pub stood. email:- Mail-me Post reply -->London Kidbrooke 14 Feb Kidbrooke Routes B16 and 291We are asking Transport For London Buses to introduce the extension of route B16 to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) in the very near future. So the people of Kidbrooke and Eltham can get to the Jubilee Line at North Greenwich Station as well as the 02 Arena. We are also hoping route 291 may be extended from Queen Elizabeth Hospital to Eltham Station via Shooters Hill Road, Kidbrooke Park Road, Kidbrooke Rochester Way. Well Hall Circus, Westhorne Avenue, Eltham Hill, Eltham Church and Well Hall Road. To improve bus services between Eltham Hill, Westhorne Avenue and Kidbrooke Rochester Way with Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Woolwich Town Centre for the first time. It will also provide an improved service to Eltham Station and also link Westhorne Avenue with Eltham Town Centre (High Street) at Eltham Church. So would benefit so many local people. We are asking Local MP's and Councillors to support us to get these local bus service improvements introduced. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Julian Russell 7 Nov Kidbrooke Route B16It is very disappointing to hear the proposed extension of route B16 from Kidbrooke Station to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) has been delayed. We hope TFL still plan to extend route B16 to North Greenwich Station and the 02 Arena in the near future. This will improve public transport in the Kidbrooke area and provide direct bus inks with the Jubilee Line. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Julian Russell 21 Jul Kidbrooke Hadrian Cycling ClubDuring the 1950s and 1960s the Hadrian CC, a Kidbrooke based cycling club, was in existence. As I recall they used to have meetings in the Progress Hall, Eltham; and weekly Sunday trips through the Kent countryside at break-neck speed where they cyclists could not enjoy the landscape. I would think that most of the former members have passed away! Does anyone have any details of when the club folded; any records of club champions; and any further details? And are Cycling Clubs as popular today as they used to be 40/50 years ago? Post reply -->London Kidbrooke 5 Mar ^ KidbrookeHi We have many pictures of the hadrian cycling club back in the 1930's. This club was founded by my Father in law and his friend around 1930. His name was Willian Selves (bill ) and his friend , we think was called reg. ( don't know the surname ) . We have a lot of old photo's of cycling in england and tour de france circuit in 1933/34/35. William Selves had a certificate for the London to Bath ride in under 8 hours. His bike was a Bassett, the shop it came from was opposite Woowich Arsenal Station Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Louise Selves 23 Sep |
