Hi. I also lived in the prefabs you mentioned we moved in right after they were built. My sister was born in 1947. We lived right on the Square. It was number 25. My best friends lived across the square and also right next to me. We moved to Canada in 1952 and to California in 1957. Would love to hear what memories you have. Jean. Last name was Campbell.

Kidbrooke Route 132

I agree this is indeed good news for Kidbrooke Rochester Way linking the area to Greenwich Peninsula Shopping Centre and filmworks Cinema as well as North Greenwich Station (Jubilee Line), 02 Arena and Bexleyheath Shopping Centre
Route 132 will stop by Sainsburys on the Greenwich Peninsula which is just a few minutes walk from the other shopping Centres and Asda's on Bugsby Way. I hope route 132 will be more frequent when the route is extended to North Greenwich Station.

Kidbrooke RAF Kidbrooke

I was posted to No. 4 MT Coy. RAF Kidbrooke in December 1951 till June 1953. Where the school stands now was the Station Headquarters and married quarters. to the left of the main entrance as you go in is the football field where there used to be the Guardroom, fire station, cookhouse and of course our billets. where the tennis courts are now was the vehicle hangar and behind that was the workshops.Accross the the road opposite where the supermarket now stands was the officers mess and towards the railway staion was there garages which I helped to erect. the camp boundary stretched along the pavement almost to the junction where the Dover Patrol pub stood.

Kidbrooke RAF Kidbrooke

Let me put you straight .
The royal mail site was north of the train line west of kidbrooke park road. Thomas Tallis School is the next plot north of this. The Homebase superstore is located on the old aerodrome as it was locally known. it had 3 or 4 white huts on it the next area noth off that was a large concreted area with steel hoops in it. This was the opposite side of the road from Thomas Tallis. Between this and the Rochester Way was the old Donkey Field Site.
So Terra sounds more correct than you are.

I was on 51 MT and am researching the rest of the RAF M T Companies.
Was 4 MT mainly a car service?? What trucks did you use for the Boat boxes?
Do you have any other history of 4 MT.

Also there were civillian fitters and drivers employed at RAF Kidbrooke. As an RAF driver I had many varied outings in and around London ie: Airministry runs, London district movements, driving guards of honour to various functions and living through that dreadfull pea souper of a fog in late 1952.

Michael, after reading a piece in last week's Sunday Times Magazine re the BBRC, I found the website and found your letter. My name is Carol Britter (nee Young) and I was in your sister's class at Henwick Road School. I remember coming to your home on the occasion of Hazel's birthday and your dad put on a ventriloquist show for us! I also lived with my parents in a prefab in Kelbrooke Crescent which was off the Rochester Way. We moved to Susan Road when I was 18 on the very site of your prefabs and my boyfriend (now my husband) and I, with my parents, spend many happy Friday evenings in the Dover Patrol with a few drinks listening to the pianist. Please remember me to Hazel.

Kidbrooke Routes B16 and 291

We are asking Transport For London Buses to introduce the extension of route B16 to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) in the very near future. So the people of Kidbrooke and Eltham can get to the Jubilee Line at North Greenwich Station as well as the 02 Arena.

We are also hoping route 291 may be extended from Queen Elizabeth Hospital to Eltham Station via Shooters Hill Road, Kidbrooke Park Road, Kidbrooke Rochester Way. Well Hall Circus, Westhorne Avenue, Eltham Hill, Eltham Church and Well Hall Road. To improve bus services between Eltham Hill, Westhorne Avenue and Kidbrooke Rochester Way with Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Woolwich Town Centre for the first time. It will also provide an improved service to Eltham Station and also link Westhorne Avenue with Eltham Town Centre (High Street) at Eltham Church. So would benefit so many local people. We are asking Local MP's and Councillors to support us to get these local bus service improvements introduced.

Kidbrooke Route B16

It is very disappointing to hear the proposed extension of route B16 from Kidbrooke Station to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) has been delayed. We hope TFL still plan to extend route B16 to North Greenwich Station and the 02 Arena in the near future. This will improve public transport in the Kidbrooke area and provide direct bus inks with the Jubilee Line.

Kidbrooke Hadrian Cycling Club

During the 1950s and 1960s the Hadrian CC, a Kidbrooke based cycling club, was in existence. As I recall they used to have meetings in the Progress Hall, Eltham; and weekly Sunday trips through the Kent countryside at break-neck speed where they cyclists could not enjoy the landscape. I would think that most of the former members have passed away!

Does anyone have any details of when the club folded; any records of club champions; and any further details? And are Cycling Clubs as popular today as they used to be 40/50 years ago?

Kidbrooke

Hi

We have many pictures of the hadrian cycling club back in the 1930's. This club was founded by my Father in law and his friend around 1930. His name was Willian Selves (bill ) and his friend , we think was called reg. ( don't know the surname ) . We have a lot of old photo's of cycling in england and tour de france circuit in 1933/34/35.

William Selves had a certificate for the London to Bath ride in under 8 hours. His bike was a Bassett, the shop it came from was opposite Woowich Arsenal Station

Kidbrooke Trains

During the 1960s I was working an apprenticeship electrician for which I was absolutely useless. As part of that lousy job I had attend a course at a training centre in Camden Town so had catch an overground to central London and change to the Northern Line.

Unlike today the overground train services were always on time in those days. However the 07:29 am which I always caught was always two minutes late and passengers could set their watch by it. However, on one occasion this particular service was on time and all the usual passengers missed it. Mind you, we saw the funny side of it!

Kidbrooke Coronation Year 1953

During Coronation Year 1953, I was eight years old and living in Kidbrooke. I recall the street having an open-air Coronation Party in Fairfax Gardens to celebrate the accession to the throne by HM Elizabeth II.

During that year I was attending Kidbrooke Park junior mixed school. All the pupils in our school had to march to a point in the Shooters Hill Road outside "The Fox under the Hill" pub to wait for HM to drive past after her coronation. We waited for 45 minutes for the big event but we did not see anything because the car was a hard-top which went past in two seconds. What a waste of time as we did not see HM because it all happened all too quickly. Anyway, I still have my Presentation Book and Tea-Cup.

That year I recall watching the Matthews final on a neighbours black/white television because my parents did not have a TV set at that time; Hilary and Sherpa Tensing conquering Mt Everest.

Does anyone else have any memories from that particular year?

Kidbrooke Coronation

Coronation.

Chris, I think your memory is at fault. I too was on that long march to Shooters Hill and the two hour wait just to wave my flag for a few seconds.

The Queens car was an open top vehicle and a sullen bored looking Queen just drove past with massive police escort. Two women behind said “she wasn’t even smiling”.

Remember the whole school going to the Roxy to see “A Queen is crowned” and later “The conquest of Everest”?

Kidbrooke Coronation 1953

Ha, Ha! That is the oldest con-trick in the book, you are transferring your faulty memory on to someone else. You obviously did not understand what was taking place; or had your eyes closed whilst wearing sunglasses. There was no massive police escort and HM drove past too quickly too notice any facial expressions.

You were totally wrong about the site of RAF Kidbrooke being located on the site of the current supermarket; and stating that Westhorne Manor was an all boys school pre-1960 as I was a pupil there so I know.

I remember you from the past. Everytime someone corrected you on your mistakes, you became aggressive because you are too arrogant or insecure too admit you are wrong.

Kidbrooke Coronation

I too was at Kidbrooke Park junior school and attend the Coronation 'procession'. The wait was only 45 minutes and there was no massive police escort - there were only a couple of cars and and a few police outriders. The road was almost empty.

Kidbrooke Kidbrooke

I was born in Wales during the mid-1940s and moved to Kidbrooke a few years later as my father wanted to find better work other than being a collier. The estate on to which I moved was previously the site a farm.

Most of the children in my street were appoximately the same age and attended Kidbrooke Park infants and junior mixed school in Hargood Road and we grew up together until we all dispersed upon leaving senior school during the late 1950s/early 1960s.

We used to make our own fun. For example, we used to acquire a tennis ball and the old-style fencing staves minus the wire bit then played improvised hockey with 22 players per side. Unlike the siblings of today we never did anything wrong except get two tones too noisy because we were excited.

We also used to play soccer quite a lot. We also used to go swimming at the open-air pool in Hornfair Park. Four of us used to be in the pool from 6 till 7 am because admission was free.
