I have recently come across a book called Walking my Walworth, it's about a young girl living in Walworth during the sixties, it gives a real insight into the area etc for anyone that might be interested. I used to visit mt Gran in the late 1960s and loved going in this sweet shop. Always called Nell's. Also Bishops Park, as a little girl my Gran would take me and we would have a go at the pitch and put as well as the swings. I wondered if it was still there, have'nt visited for years. This is the stuff that memories are made of. Post reply -->London Kennington AngelaBeeton7@aol.com 12 Apr Kennington AngelaBeeton7@aol.comDoes anyone remember Jimmy Cruse, he was my dad and lived in Wedgewood House, flats, from prewar until he got married to my mum June Debenham in 1954. They used to tell me such wonderful stories about growing up in Kennington. I never got tired of hearing them and now look at Kennington on the map and have fond memories myself. My dad's parents were called Tom and Lizzie Cruse, there was also their offspring Lizzie, Joey, Jimmy, Harry, Emmy, Mary and Ethel. I would love to hear from anyone who might have known them. I wonder, can the areas like "Braganza st" or "Westcott rd" be considered as a safe place to live? It's quite close to the tube station and it seems to be very quiet there... But who knows?. Post reply -->London Kennington Tim 11 Feb ^ Kennington oneillfortune@talktalk.netYou will love Kennington, I have lived here 20 years! There are lovely restaurants and pubs, but stay in the Kennington area, not the Walworth Road, as there is nothing nice there, other than M&S! I've such vivid memories of the building and, as I've got older, wish I'd written down the stories. However, I would love to get hold of a photograph of Clayton Buildings or hear from anyone who also remembers them. They represented a very hard life, but I hope they were not demolished without any record being kept. Hilary Mail-me Post reply -->London Kennington 13 Oct ^ Kennington clayton buildings^ Kennington AngelaBeeton7@aol.comHi Hilary, just read your message about Clayton Buildings. My gran lived in St Mary's Gardens, not far from Clayton Buildings and I am sure she lived there at some point. My mum who was born in 1929 in Lambeth, used to tell me stories of Clayton Buildings and latterly the baths, communal bathing, where you had to shout out for more hot in number 6 or whatever number cubicle you were in. Hard times, I am sure, but they all stuck together and got on with it didn't they. You have to admire them for that. I will ask my mum'sister if she has any pics of Clayton Buildings. Sadly my lovely mum died in 2005. Will let you know if I find any pics. Angela Post reply -->London Kennington 12 Apr ^ KenningtonHi Angela, so good to get a reply from you and to know that someone else remembers Clayton buildings. It's such a shame the area appears to have been demolished and very few pictures taken for the archive. Yes, I remember the baths. In the days before we all had bathrooms, it seems incredible now but I remember my father always went for a bath the day we went on holiday ... can't imagine that now. He did always say that you had lovely towels and plenty of hot water. I think that was the treat before the holiday started, the rest of the time it was the tin bath in front of the fire. If you do manage to locate a photograph that would be super, so thank you for trying. The block of Flats around HOTSPUR STREET have a few apartments for sale. It is just to the south of Black Prince Street. What is this area like to live in - crime, violence (as if they are mutually separate!) and the friendliness of the people etc? Is this part of the congestion zone, if so, how does someone manage to just KEEP a car there? I rarely use one, but do have an old motor for longer trips. Enjoying myself so far, but finding it a bit lonely. Anyone have any suggestions for me? Places to go, things to do locally that would help me meet people in the local area. I'm hoping to find a good yoga place, too, so if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears. Post reply -->London Kennington RK 23 Jan ^ Kennington One yoga place and free tai chi!Hey there, For yoga, deepaspirit is pretty good - between Oval and Stockwell, and there's also free tai chi at the oval cricket ground on saturday.
