Went to Henry Fawcett School and then Archbishop Tenison's at the Oval. Nothing but great memories even though we didn't have a bathroom (went to the publc baths in Lambeth Walk - a great experience), and our playgrounds were bombsites (the site of the old Kennington Theatre, which was hit during the war.) I too remember going down to Bob White's (great to hear from the Whie family, by the way) and also to that little pub in Cleaver Square - the Prince of Wales - where we had some great evenings in the early 60s. My main interest is finding more about Alfred George Hopkins, a studio potter working in Lower Kennington Lane in 1924-32. He moved to Broadstairs and died there. I appears he took over an old glassworks. Any information would be of great interest. Kennington St Philips Demolished Church - Reedworth RoadHave lived in Lollard street for 16yrs now and recently saw the film S.W.A.L.K aka MELODY at the Media tech room BFI...starring Mark Lester! It opens with a slow shot panning back from the Houses of Parliament, where you can spot the old terrace houses and the church before it moves to the next shot of Kennington Cross Boy brigade marching! Does anyone have photos/stories or maybe website info that I could research....for years I looked at vestry building beside the demolished church and didn't have a clue it was a vestry..........would be good to see photographs of interior and reason why it was demolished! THANK YOU! Also Bishops Park, as a little girl my Gran would take me and we would have a go at the pitch and put as well as the swings. I wondered if it was still there, have'nt visited for years. This is the stuff that memories are made of. I've such vivid memories of the building and, as I've got older, wish I'd written down the stories. However, I would love to get hold of a photograph of Clayton Buildings or hear from anyone who also remembers them. They represented a very hard life, but I hope they were not demolished without any record being kept. Hilary Mail-me Post reply -->London Kennington 13 Oct ^ Kennington clayton buildings^ Kennington AngelaBeeton7@aol.comHi Hilary, just read your message about Clayton Buildings. My gran lived in St Mary's Gardens, not far from Clayton Buildings and I am sure she lived there at some point. My mum who was born in 1929 in Lambeth, used to tell me stories of Clayton Buildings and latterly the baths, communal bathing, where you had to shout out for more hot in number 6 or whatever number cubicle you were in. Hard times, I am sure, but they all stuck together and got on with it didn't they. You have to admire them for that. I will ask my mum'sister if she has any pics of Clayton Buildings. Sadly my lovely mum died in 2005. Will let you know if I find any pics. Angela Post reply -->London Kennington 12 Apr |
