^ Clapham Junction - Hi Rog in OzI videoed the Elvis Impersonators as we were out on saturday night. So watched it last night and can tell you that the winner was someone called Shawn Klush from Pennsylvania. As the others said, think the best one won. Post reply -->London Clapham Junction Sheila 1 Oct Clapham Junction Sheila: Re Brian Gaye....Rog in OzIf Brian is the person I am thinking of he was one of our Atherton St Mob as he lived in Battersea Park Road just opposite our street so we were his closest playmates. He actually lived above Tesco's, hence his very original nickname 'Tesco'. The door to the flat was in an alleyway between Tesco's and Joe Mist's the best wet fish shop I have ever seen. The Gayes were a very quiet family-I can't ever remember seeing his mum and dad although he could have had a sister. He went to William Blake at the same time as me but might have been in a different year. Does this sound like the same person. Don't know about his uncle owning that very famous coffee stall on Chelsea Bridge though. Rog PS I have actually searched for him on F/Utd several times, without luck. Post reply -->London Clapham Junction Roger Adams radams@tpg.com.au 30 Sep ^ Clapham Junction - Hi Rog in OzI really can't remember much about him now, he came to mind as I was talking about the the pie stall on Chelsea Bridge. I met him when I was about 17, I remember he used to have a motorbike and sometimes would pick me up from work. I had just started work for a firm of accountants just off The Strand. Probably only a couple of times, he turned up there to take me home. Much to my embarrassment, as think they invited him in and gave him a cup of tea. I remember he worked as a carpet fitter. A few years back one of my cousins had some new carpet fitted, and the person who turned up to do the fitting was him - think she said he was married, with children and living in the Surrey area. I think he was part of a group of boys, not that I had much to do with them. Think some of them lived around Ethelburga Street. I will ask my cousin as she grew up with some of them - do you remember any names. Think Brian would be about 63/65 now. We both recall the Tolpuddle Martyrs, but know nothing about them. I wondered if this is up your street Skip as think its tied up with Unions. I think I read that they were deported to Australia, don't know if they stayed there or eventually came back. I expect some of their ancestors are still in Oz. Post reply -->London Clapham Junction Sheila 28 Sep ^ Clapham Junctionsheila ,the tolpuddle martyrs, they were sent to oz botant bay so i remember reading,i think the average sentence was seven years,i believe a couple of them came back ,some died and some made a new life for themselves when they were released, imagine the criminals of today being treated like that, the pc do gooders would have a field day, mind you that part of dorset is a lovely area,i bet those poor people did miss it.jim,m Post reply -->London Clapham Junction 29 Sep Clapham Junction - Haunted HouseI notice on page two that there is a posting about a haunted house in Eland Road, never heard of this road but presumably it is at the Junction. Apparently it backed onto the mental hospital. Which hospital would this be. Was it BB who was very up on the history of Battersea, but haven't heard from her for a while.... I never saw the inside of Arding and Hobbs until I was 14 working on the railway, boy did I make up for lost time.... atb fred Post reply -->London Clapham Junction 27 Sep ^ Clapham Junction - Hi Fred re. shoppingMy mum was quite strict with us and hated us playing in the streets - but of course we used to get out whenever possible. There were no cars in the street then, the only people I remember with a car was the Chorleys. We used to use the middle of the road to play cricket, rounders, hopscotch etc. Sometimes the neighbours used to come out and tell us to "go and play outside your own house". What other games did the kids play in the street. I remember every saturday afternoon I used to go shopping with my mum, we used to get the bus to Princes Head, and from there we would walk to the Junction. I seem to remember Woolworths at the Junction had a milkshake bar, so sometimes if we were lucky would get a milkshake. Rog Post reply -->London Clapham Junction Roger Adams radams@tpg.com.au 27 Sep ^ Clapham Junction .........Jim................Skipper..Jim correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the coffee stall situated at the back of the public conveniences at Clap, Junc, opposite Hastings shop. If it was, I posted a little story on that some time ago, The trams used to stop almost dead opposite it and we tied the stall to the back of the tram, kicked the chocks away, then when the tram went so did the coffee stall, half way up Lavender hill before it stopped. Pies ,cakes and cup's all over the place. We were really naughty boy's. Post reply -->London Clapham Junction skipper 29 Sep |
