Buy hot & cold snacks and mix with each other in the warm and off the streets. Youth Workers and social workers could also be on hand to give them help and advice on a range of matters including courses, jobs etc. The Centre could be open from say 10.30 am to 10.00 pm. More needs to be done to help our youngsters and get them away from crime and especially gang crime. But they would have to be well managed so people do not cause trouble there and get them closed down. Post reply -->London Catford Liam Murphy 25 Sep Catford More ShopsCatford could do with more supermarkets now that the Sainsburys Local Store at the petrol station on Lewisham High Street/ Rushey Green has closed down. Shell are opening a a Shell Select shop there but the Sainsburys store will be really missed by local people. Especially older people that cannot get in to Lewisham or the main Catford Shopping Centre easily. Post reply -->London Catford Liam Murphy 25 Sep Catford betting shopsI see a double shopfront in the centre of catford is set to be yet another betting shop, onwards and upwards huh? We could have had another riva like bar/restuarant in there. Post reply -->London Catford Nick 23 Sep Catford CatfordCatford? what a dump. It's full of drunks, junkies and depressing people, and it seems to be getting more like a GETTO every single day. Catford has NOTHING to shout about. I am ashame to tell people that I leave in Catford. Years ago it was a fairly 'nice' place to live, but now I feel depressed each time I walk down the road. The pavements are all uneven, litter everywhere, ugly new flats sprouting out from all over the place and none of them blend in with the area. It sickens me that I have to pay my council tax and still have to walk on broken and uneven pavements and open rubbish bags. As for clothes shopping in Catford - forget it. I feel it for the younger youths who roam about Catford. There is NOTHING to do in Catford hence why you see kids hanging around Catford at night. Instead of moaning about the amount of kids (black and white) why don't the council open back up the some of the buildings/halls which have been left to rot and bring them back to life? I lived in Sydenham and went to school in lewisham so I would change busses in Catford and the wonderful smell that came from the Jam Factory set me up for the day, this was in the early fifties by the way. Is the coach company Timpson's still on the Broadway? My Mother was a O'Connor and lived in Deptford perhaps we are related. Post reply -->London Catford brian 22 Aug ^ Catford 119 BROMLEY ROAD ETC., ETC.Hi Brian, The Timpsons depot went years ago just the way the Black and White Milk Bar did. I moved away from Catford in 1957, but have been back a few times to visit "old haunts" and also to show my kids where I grew up. I last went back for a visit in 2006. A lot has changed but there are still many of theold landmarks around. I don't recall any family living in Deptford, most of the O'Connors I am related to lived in SE4 or SE6 e mail: Mail-me Post reply -->London Catford Bernard O 26 Aug ^ Catford Bromley Road etcHello Bernard Thanks for the information it has really got the old brainbox doing overtime. The Black and White Milk Bar rings very loud bells as does the Catford (or is it Lewisham) Hippodrome on the corner of Brownhill Road, a treat as a kid was to be taken there and then go to the Italian restaurant opposite which I think was called Comminetis. When we were oldish teenagers we would go to the Bellingham Lido which was on Bromley Road . After school we would wait outside The Prendergast Girls School to see what talent there was, those were the days! Can you remember the SMOG of 1952, I was 12 and had been to a concert at the Catford Town Hall, when we came out you could not see a hand in front of you and we had to walk home to Sydenham, I literally walked into the back of a parked bus. Post reply -->London Catford 11 Oct Catford Another betting shop opposite NandosWhy on earth would they put another betting shoping in catford. sorry but i dont think the borough is interested in regenerating Catford at all. This is how they keep areas down and become Ghettos. Catford was never this bad 10 years ago. Catford had a Marks and Spencers were boot is would you believe it ? Post reply -->London Catford Mishell 26 Feb ^ Catford betting shops..Fantastic, yet another betting shop..... all we need now is a few more pound shops and a couple of pawn brokers.... I am at a loss to see how this helps this area as well... If this was east dulwich, they'd have petitioned against it, they went mad over a cafe nero... how the other half live!!! Post reply -->London Catford Nick 27 Feb ^ Catford kcleevely@hotmail.comTell me about it. There are two betting shops NEXT to each other on Sandhurst Rd. Not funny. At least the Indian and the new West Indian are good. Recommend them if you've not tried. Post reply -->London Catford Kate 31 Mar ^ Catford ...and now yet another betting shop in Catford...Incredulously, as I walked past the former Woolwich branch in Catford last week, I read a notice on their door that consent has been granted for YET ANOTHER betting shop. Who are our Councillors? Anyone interested in trying to do something about this/petition etc? How is this helping the area's regeneration/social issues?? Unless residents start getting vocal, I can't see any regeneration of this area going ahead - on the contrary. Post reply -->London Catford A 25 Aug |
