Post reply -->London Canning Town Gillian Thorne 19 Aug Canning Town STAR LANE SCHOOL, CANNING TOWNOur grandfather lived in Dale Road, Canning Town between the ages of 9 and 12, between 1913 and 1916, and we are trying to find out which school he might have attended and track down any registers. We have been to Newham Archives and checked the registers for Hallsville and Holy Trinity schools with no luck so, living in Dale Road, would Star Lane School have been the most likely? If so, does anyone know where their registers for those years might be kept, as Newham Archives don't have them. If the school still exists, perhaps they are still at the school. I would be grateful for any advice. I do not know how long they lived in canning town before moving to essex.my father david was born in essex 1932 and he often spoke about his mother and father living in canning town.my dads father died when he was very young.I found imformation to say my nan was born east donyland.I would love to hear from anyone who may have any imformation.from daves daughter. My memories of the street are that in my block of houses (cornered by Mary st. and Lawrence st) most of the houses where occupied by grandparents downstairs and children and grandchildren upstairs. Names that come to mind are Brown, Copping,Baker, Bruns,Dickel,Everet Lowings and Groves. There was a shop on each corner,one owned by Tom and Grace,and on the other a grocery shop (Bills) We were surrounded by debri's where we used to play footie,cricket, and cowboys and ''Indibums'' My dad (Tom) used to work for Wakelands which backed on to our house,and he used to jump over the back wall to go to work. My dad (George) and his brothers (Vic and Ken) lived in Clever Road off Freemasons Road until around 1940. They ended up in North Kent after that but I'm pretty sure they had family members who stayed behind in the East End. My dad's parents were called George and Violet. My sister Carol was born there too in Jan 1946. We moved to 44 Desford Rd around 1958. My mums sister Rose (Deakin nay Way) lives in Sycamore Close a newer neighborhood behind the Anchor pub. The Ways were long time Canning Town residents. Grandma Rose with children Frank, Amy and Rose. Frank and Amy are both deceased and both lived in Nottingham after leaving London. My sister Carol lives in Penrith in the Lake District and I immigrated to America in 1975. I live in Seattle with my wife Lori and our three sons Andrew, Brett and Chan. I miss Canning Town and and often tell my boys stories from my childhood growing up in London's eastend. I have many old pictures from those days, Star Lane school photos from 58/59 when I was on the soccer and cricket teams. The soccer photo has Frankie Lampard front and center holding the date card. I visit every few years and although not much is left I still get very nostalgic just driving around Post reply -->London Canning Town rmitch124@aol.com 26 Nov Canning Town canning town the end of a great area and people 1I walk through canning town 1 0r 2 a week when i come back to visit me old nan who lives in clarkson rd,montisque terrace which are being torn down now,such asham,but my point is i dont no anybody round there now and their area is unreconisable to anybody who was born and bred there,theirs nothing left what happened to the great pubs like the PITTSHEAD,PAULSHEAD,GROUND-RENT,SHAKESPERE AND THE FLYING ScUDD,these were pubs where all the locals met up,these pubs are what made the area great along with the proper canning towners and are part of canning towns history.Its so heartbreaking to see these pubs abandoned or turned into flats,the reason these pubs are gone is the real locals have been pushed out and moved on, cause i believe the government wanted this and achieved it and nobody drinks in pubs anymore so they cant afford to stay open.I think the only pubs left are the HALLSEVILLE TAVERN(WHITE HOUSE),STREEIES,BEcKTON AND ORDENANcE. Post reply -->London Canning Town mickymonster04@aol.com 3 Jun Canning Town canning town "the end of a great area&people 2im from the 80s&90s era,to me that is when the area starting changing ,but my nan whos 75,and me mum and dad who are now 51 and 47,they will say they were from canning town when it was the real canning town.My nan from the 30s&40s and the stories she tells me are brilliant.i would of loved to of been brought up in that era,cause it seems eveyone in that time was respecteble and looked out for eachother,it was a proper community where everyone knew & looked out for eachother,you wont get that now.Ultimatley its like a ghost town round there now ands i suppose this website gives the older generation who moved on of the area the chance to find lost relatives or friends and tell their of memories and stories,its ashame its ended up this way,in we have been pushed out and have to resort to communicating on the internet and its probably a great thing in its a saviour for the lost real born and bred canning towners to share there memories causethey will soon be lost forever.
