Post or Ask something here in 'Bromley-by-Bow' ^ Bromley-by-Bow RE:- Cottage Place - 1866HI meech, Valerie et al, I typed a long explanation of how I got this info but this server somehow mangled it! Anyway Cottage Place was between Crown Place/Terrace and Church Row and my guess is that it was between Bromley High Street and Three Mills La. on St. Leonard Street (to the east). The southern part of this was Bromley House which looks like a small manor on 1861 map, though it had some buildings on St. Leonard St. Best guess is on the corner of the old church plot of St. Leonard Street and Dyers Row (later Priory St.) Bad news is the church got bombed in WW2 and the approach road did the rest - `pave para-dise aaaaaaaaand put up a paaarking lot!` - nothing left but the churchyard gate. Hope this helps - Tony Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow tonyhealy1@hotmail.co.uk 13 Aug ^ Bromley-by-Bow Grace Street, BromleyThis became known as Grace Street and was a turning off Devon,s Road, two turnings away from Devon's Road School in Bromley and not far from Bromley Station in the other direction. ref: Bartholomew's Atlas of greater London re-printed in 1954. Each terrace was given the name of Cottages. Hope this is of help Regards Mail-me Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow Marian 24 Mar Bromley-by-Bow A missing Church!!Is anyone able to tell me what happened to St. Gabriel's Church. My in-laws were married ther in 1943 and my husband was baptised ther in 1944. I was trying to get a photo of it for the family scrapbook. Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow churchjan Bromley-by-Bow probably the worst place in the country to live inI lived in B-B-B for 8 months when i first moved to london and i found it awful. for a start there is a choking "motorway" runs right through the middle and leaves your bogies grey after a walk to the tube every morning. DLR is a joke. I found the people pretty unfriendly. but it is a place of unimaginable ugliness so I guess like attracts like. I got to know a couple of people on the estate where I used to live (Aberfeldy, in case you're still thinking of moving there) and they gave me an idea of the social make up of the people, imigrants (nothing wrong with that), junkies, weirdos, national front, and i guess people who can't afford to live anywhere else. (like me at the time). I rented a house with 5 friends for £50 each. if you really have to then do it but its not for the faint hearted as the streets are deserted at night everyones too scared to be on the streets seemingly. if you want to live central and in the east end then consider Bow, the Roman Road end its great and a bi Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow ^ Bromley-by-BowI used to live in Bromley-by-Bow at No.12 Bruce Road, no longer there having been bomb damaged when the original Old Palace School received a direct hit during the blitz. Many firemen and women were killed that night in 1941. I agree there were often smells or stinks if you prefer due to the many factories that were around then. On the whole life wasn't bad there, neighbours were friendly and people helped each other in any hardships that may have occurred. As for being afraid of going out at night now, in those days during the war there was a total blackout, you wern't aloud to show lights of any description outside, but we still used to go out, and wern't afraid of being mugged, in fact we had never heard of that word then. Devons Road had quite a few shops and stalls in the street and was always busy with shoppers. There was a recreation ground in St.Leonards Street, and during the war it had underground air raid shelters there. Also there used to be open air ballroom danc Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow ^ Bromley-by-Bow I was a Housing Officer there.....and can concur with some of this. There were some good folk, particularly in the Bengali community. Aberfeldy was about 2/3rds white, 1/3 Bengali, and the white families were more or less as you described. I nearly choked on my pizza when I first saw Harry Enfield's Wayne and Waynetta Slob, as they were our tenants !! It was a long trek through various underpasses to get to the relatively thriving metropolis of Chrisp Street. I used to catch the train from Canning Town station which was too depressing for words. Up by BBB itself wasn't quite as bad, but there was less of a sense of community round there - I did 6 months on the Perrin & Glaucus Estates and then the BBB Estate itself. ^ Bromley-by-Bow To be fair, BBB is what you make of it.I grew up there (born in 67) & loved the adventure. At that time there were still bomb sites, like the old railway sidings at Devon's Rd, which are now industrial estate. Things went down hill when the local council seemed to create a ghetto for the immigrant community. I saw it change from a fairly nice & safe working class area to, what can only be described as a slum! They've started to improve the area, mainly because of the Olympics, but you'll never get the old community back. Each block of flats on the Coventry Cross Estate (where Marner Sch is) used to have it's own wash house, community grass area and drying rooms. These have now been turned into prayer rooms for the local community, most of which are immigrants from Bangladesh who have never worked. I still work in the local Tesco and know many of them very well. They are quite open about the fact that the only reason they came to the UK was to have a lage family and live off the state! Racism has developed ov Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow ShazzyB 19 Jan ^ Bromley-by-Bow How I would like to disagree with you......but I can't. I live in B-B-B now, due to it being close to Queen Mary, and I cannot wait to leave. I don't find it dangerous in any way, but strange people do seem to get out at night and the area, I mean the whole area all the way to that other jewel: Whitchapel, is simply filthy all the time. There is no sense of community whatever and I will simply not miss it after I leave. Very sad. Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow 28 Mar ^ Bromley-by-Bow You arent JimAnd I for one am far more interested in what you have to say, so thankyou. Presumably you were about 15 at the time ? I saw a documentary on TV recently about a Doodlebug that hit a dept store in Catford: it was an horrific account by people of your own age. We watch war on TV now. Perhaps the above poster who describes Bow (I don't live there) as the 'worst place in the world' should try the Middle East. J Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow ^ Bromley-by-BowI would just like to add to what I have already written about Bromley-by Bow. Life is what you make it and if life there now is as bad as the previous writers say it is it must be down to the people now living there. Generation after generations of people grew up and lived there, and even during both world wars and particularly the air raids of world war two the inhabitants made the best of things and helped each other. As I say, life is what you make it. I have lived in this area almost two years now, and I will leave as soon as I can. How sad that it was a much better place during the war. There is an Adventure Playground, if that is what you refer to, which has been full of rubbish ever since I moved in, obviously a reflexion upon the people of the area. Nobody cares about this place, and if the neighbours don't take care of it, this is what it will look like. Bring on 1939! Think they are called 'Bromly By Bow' and last I head they were trying to get registered in a league. Mostly a bunch of youngish Asian guys getting it together themselves. There is a new community centre there called the Marner Centre where they meet I think . If you contact the Marner Centre they can put you in touch I'm not into footie so cant tell you much more Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow Mike 6 Jan ^ Bromley-by-BowYes there is a football club in Bromley By Bow and has been established since 1990. Rgds Sham Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow Sham 12 Apr ^ Bromley-by-BowWell, I actually own a house in Bromley-by-Bow. I have lived here for 3 and a half years now. I bought the place originally because I was being priced out of the market as a first time buyer and it was the cheapest area inZone 2 that I could find. The area freaked me out at first and there are lots of problems that do need sorted out. Fortunately many of them *are* being sorted out and there are many visible signs that the area really is being regenerated. Now I am really pleased to be living here - there is a sense of community and so much is changing that there is genuine hope in the air. Remember, every 'up and coming area' in central London was universally considered a shithole at some time or other. Post reply -->London Bromley-by-Bow Bell the Cat 19 Jun ^ Bromley-by-Bow Moving to BBBI'm considering buying a flat near BBB station and not being from lon and a first time buyer, not sure whether I should go for it. Been told the area is not safe but I'll be working at the royal lon hosp in whitechapel and will be taking the tube late at night at times for work. How safe is the area for a young woman then?
