Brixton ‘Plug-In’ - The launch of reggae singer Michael Arkk’s new single ‘Never Give Up’ An Evening of Roots Reggae, Dance, Poetry and African folk music

Michael Arkk, Singer, Songwriter, Producer and Poet, delivers a powerfully charged show every time he performs. His songs, his poetry are of unusual depth. He started singing from his early teens in his native country Jamaica and has travelled around the world delivering his unique blend of music and poetry.

Brought up in Jamaica in the church where his Dad was a minister Arkk was influenced by gospel singers mostly from America such as Mahalia Jackson, The Five Blind Boys from Alabama, Jim Reeves, Sam Cook, Elvis Presley, Shirley Cesar, and many others. Reggae music was not very welcomed in the family home, but Arkk has always loved roots reggae. As a musician he has drawn from a wide range of artists in the creation of his music.

The key issues tackled within the body of work of the forthcoming installation are concealment, transparency and hidden messages. ‘Prophecies and Deceits’ uses motifs and words to explore the correlation between religion and politics, creating a pseudo-religious space that seeks to draw attention to the intrinsic relationship between religion, the media and war.

Brixton Micro-Macro Vision

Works by Beata Kozlowska, Jean Elliot, Elaine Mullings & Tomasz Stando

Private View: Friday 13th of March 2009 - 6 pm to 11 pm
Exhibition runs from: Friday 13th to 19th of Match 2009
Gallery Opening Hours: Sat, Mon, Tues, Wed: 2.30 pm - 6.30 pm
Last day of Exhibition: Thurs 19th of March: 11.00am to 5.00pm

The unifying element between each exhibiting artists’ work lies within their preoccupation with the dialogue between the formal and conceptual. Each artist explores within their own media how structure and composition mirror metaphor, underlying visual and hidden cultural language. Their vision focuses on the examination of the tiniest gesture being reflected within the biggest of conventions and visa versa: Micro-Macro Vision

Brixton Two Mad Docs An exhibition of works by Nora Rahman and Vaikunthan Rajaratnam

“We are not artists but medicine is our art”

Private View: Friday 20th of February 2009 - 6 pm to 11 pm
Exhibition runs from: Friday 20th of February to 5th of March 2008
Gallery Opening Hours: Fri, Sat, Mon, Tues, Wed: 2.30 pm - 6.30 pm
Last day of Exhibition: Thurs 5th of March: 11.00am to 5.00pm

‘The two mad docs’ are two professional doctors who have been practicing medicine for the last 30 years, and having worked and lived in the Far East prior to moving to the UK in 2000.
Though not artists by trade and training, in this collection they have compiled their personal interpretation of the ‘Art of Medicine’. The exhibition includes paintings and digital photographs of the body; expressing the beauty of medicine and surgery, and giving these doctors, who ordinarily spend so much of their time caring for patients and others, the chance to explore their inner soul and imaginations.

Brixton Rushcroft Road

Can anyone tell me please, is Rushcroft Road in Brixton a dangerous place to live?

Post reply -->London Brixton 13 Dec

Brixton

Hi there,

I have been living on Rushcroft Road for 10 years with my husband and never ever had a problem. We love it because it is close to Tescos, the cinema, the tube and the local bars. I feel safe because Brixton centre is always so busy! I use to live in Queens Park and moved because of a stabbing at the local laundrette on the way to the tube. I also felt unsafe while walking down a quiet tree linned road. Rushcroft Road - honestly? Loveley :)

Brixton Info wanted on Ebony Riding Club/back-street Horse yards

Hi, I have seen mention of the Ebony Riding Club, often, in local press and am just wondering exactly where their stabes are? I used to keep horses (1980's) in Shakespeare Road, in what was then, an old Totters Yard (Rag and Bone) and am wondering if, possibly, the Ebony Riding Club is based there? If not, where is the yard? Extremely interested in my old Inner-London Horsey-Haunts and the ERC in general (would like to know more about it) so also, any info on any other horsey places or "back-street stables/yards" that still exist within the city, would be appreciated.
Sadly, not a current horse-owner.

Thanks for reading.

Brixton Barnwell Road?

Hi! I've just found a GREAT flat on Barnwell Road, just off Dulwich Road. It's surprisingly affordable and I'd love to move there, but I know that there are pockets of Brixton to be avoided. Any knowledge of that street/area in particular? Kellet Road seems to be getting loads of kudos, and Barnwell Road is not too far, but perhaps far enough. I'm a single female, so mostly concerned about safety.

Brixton "Identikit" An exhibition of works by Jo Bodley, Anna Courcha, Angie Singh

Private View: 11th of July - 6 pm to 11 pm
Exhibition runs from: 11th of July to 17th of July 2008
Gallery Opening Hours: Sat, Mon, Tues, Wed: 2.30 pm - 6.30 pm
Last day of Exhibition: Thurs 17th of May: 11.00am to 5.00pm

The forthcoming exhibition of works by Jo Bodley, Anna Courcha and Angie Singh expresses an interest in identity and clothing. All three artists approach this issue in various ways, yet portray and address different angles of an age old dialogue between personal identity and its expression through garments as well as the significance of those when separated from the bearer. This exhibition reflects the artists’ need to preserve, represent and transform items of clothing; precious or unimportant items which have recorded and still record social history, within them, they hold the enigma of identity and clothing.
