Anerley /Birkbeck / Beckenham

I am looking for an Art club for my 7 year old daughter - anyone know of one?

Also, does anyone know of any spanish classes for her age group or wants to go halves on a teacher to minimize cost!

And lastly, are there any teenage babysitters left in this neck of the woods?! Equal opportunities posting so mature babysitters would do just as well...

Thanks in advance

Anerley North Surrey Industrial Schools, Anerley

Looking for archives/history of the Schools from around 1900 to 1930. Was there any part of the complex known as Anerley House? All I can find is the home of a silk merchant named Sanderson, but that doesn't fit in with the workhouse. Can anyone help? Email me at  Mail-me

Anerley aka N Surrey District School

I don't know of any book about it. Google on its original name "North Surrey District School", which will find a good summary at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?NorthSurreySD/NorthSurreySD.shtml It says most of the records are at the London Metropolitan Archive. Bromley Local Studies have the baptismal record. It was closed around 1938 and used as a refugee centre during WW2. After the war it became an old men's home and was indeed called "Anerley House" briefly, but later renamed "Orchard Lodge". Lists of residents are given in electoral rolls. It was closed around 1960 and demolished. The huge site (NSDS grew its own food) is now housing, James Dixon School, a Secure Children's Home which retains the name "Orchard Lodge" and Orchard Playing Fields.  Mail-me

Anerley Lost my sister and my niece

Hello, I'm David.

Would any good Samaritan in the Penge/Anerley area be prepared to do me a big big favour ?
I live in Perth West Australia. I have a sister and a niece both living in the Penge area. I have written to them both several times, but they don't answer me.
My sister lives in Bargrove Close and my niece lives in Parish Lane. I am getting a lot worried as it has been two years now since I heard from them.
Would someone care to contact me with a view to paying my Sister and my niece a visit just to see if they are alright?
You can contact me at  Mail-me

Thank you

Anerley Say "Penge"

Anerley

Its pronounced Pen-juh. And while I'm here, anyone who goes to Suffolk should take note that the place there that TV presenters called Have-a-hill is actually pronounced Havh-er-hill.

Not that I'm bitter or anything.....

Anerley Samos Road

I live in Samos Rd & would love to know the history of the maisonette flats... were they built for railway workers or clerks? By a large company for its workers? I've not seen anything similar to these lovely flats anywhere else. I believe they were built in about 1900.
In answer to some other queries, I go into London from Norwood Junction which is 5mins by bus (very frequent) or 20mins walk. You can get to Victoria (slow train only, 35 mins) or London bridge (fast train 11mins!) There is a good sized Tesco at the bottom of Elmer's End road and a decent Sainsbury in Penge near the crossroads.
Many thanks

Anerley tramlink proposed

I live in Selby Rd. I was visited the other day by someone from London Transport Office seeking my views on a new tramlink, with a station proposed for Kings Rd, just under the railway bridge on Croydon Rd heading towards Sth Norwood. The tram will connect Anerley to a variety of places Croydon, Crystal Palce, Beckenham etc, what do people think? Does anyone know the timescale?

Anerley Betts Park

can any one let me know the history of Betts park especially how it was named. possibly was it named after someone.

Anerley Betts Park began in 1927

when Penge Council bought the house and grounds of "Oaklawn", formerly the vicarage of Holy Trinity Church, Anerley, which was on the corner of Anerley Road and Croydon Road, diagonally opposite the Robin Hood. The extensive grounds of the house ran almost the entire length of the old canal. Parts of the back gardens of the two neighbouring houses were also purchased to form an L-shaped park with an access road down to the present entrance in Croydon Road. The £3000 purchase price was donated by a Mr Betts, described in the Council Minutes as "a former pupil of St John's School", and probably the same Mr Betts who rented out houses in the district. The Park opened in December 1928. The house, which had a distinctive square "watchtower", became the prestigious Penge Library, and remained its home until 1968 when subsidence forced its demolition...

Anerley ... continued

During WW2 the Council took over the Weighton Tennis and Bowls Club's courts in the lower area around the present children's playground. The courts were later removed and the area added to the Park. Further extensions have been made over the years by purchase of the rest of the canal from the Vicar of Battersea in 1933, "King George's Field" in 1939, more back garden space in 1949, and some houses on Anerley Road in recent years. Whilst in private hands the canal had irregular earth banks probably close to the original, although at least one island and fountain had been added. But park users complained that it was smelly, and amid demands for it to be filled in, the Council encased it in its present concrete trough.

Anerley The rundown of Betts Park

People are really upset about the way Betts Park has been allowed to become rundown. As a user of other parks in Bromley the contrast in maintenance standards is staggering. Our Park, including the one small flower bed, is full of weeds, stinging nettles and gardening refuse left behind by park contractors. People relieve themselves anywhere as there are no toilets, is it any wonder that we now have high levels of crime, prostitution and violence ? Police helicopters are often hovering over the park in the early hours because it has no proper fences and gates are never locked, making it a hub for crime. Many local children are no longer allowed to the park unaccompanied - Betts park was never like this. The park pre-School has been broken into several times. The children have on these occasions become really distressed. Are the Children of Penge and Anerley not as important as the children in other parts of the Borough.

living in stembeidge road as i did during the war i used to cross betts park to go to the infants school so have fond memories of the park what a shame the park has been left to rot by the local council however some body must be responsible for the upkeep and safety of the park.could not a group of petitioners be formed or a protest group it sounds time to give lazy authorities a good kick in the rear end.larry walder

Anerley Moving to Anerley

We're looking at moving to Anerley in the not-too-distant (Samos Road area, perhaps) and maybe breeding there a year or so after. Does anyone have a general opinion on the area? How are the schools? How long does it REALLY take to get to Central London? How do you feel walking at night - that kinda thing. Hugely grateful for any advice / opinions.
