Abbey Wood info on early abbey wood estate

hi my wife and her family moved to the new abbey wood estate just after it was built. one of the first families in , in fact. we are trying to put together old photos of the estate from that time especially harrowmanor way, godstow rd, ampelforth rd , con tobs area . abbey wood schools . my wife had 3 sisters so from early 60. to 70.
dad has moved since his wife died and we are trying to put old pics together to remind him of happy years in abbey wood and playing rounders with the local families and friends on the green outside their home.
been to greenwich heritage ok for floods in 1953 but very little after. especially the fairs and the growing estate. they came from te east end and did similar thing about cable st area but little for abbey wood so could anyone help ??

yes there is a place i think its round by the lesnes abbey bit of the woods people dig for fossils you can get a map also on green chain walks and lesnes abbey from the local libary it use to be £0.50 to purchase one but im not sure if its gone up there use to also be a local pond but my memory is not what it use to be so im unfirmilliar where its located in abbeywood but groups use to go pond dipping there

Abbey Wood Relocating to Abbey Wood

Hi All,

I'm plannign on buying a flat just behind abbey Wood station (new block around Chantry Close). I'm new to the area (I live in Harrow - North-West London) so would like to know more about the area.

I did visit the block of flats behind the station and it looked quiet (but then again, it was a Saturday). How safe is the surrounding areas?

Also does anyone know what effects the Cross rail development will have on the station and the surrounding area?

I moved from Finchley, north london, to abbey wood (mcleod road) a year and a half ago as I could actually afford to buy a house rather than a tiny studio flat! I think the crime rate is similar to north london - ie not brilliant. We have been broken into twice! But then again I was broken into once in north london. There are definately quite a few hoodies around and there seems to be quite a bit of drug dealing going on. But then again - where isn't there? I think it is more noticeable here because it generally quite quiet.

Overall i feel pretty safe walking home at night and our neighbours are incredibly friendly and welcoming - we had christmas cards from 3 houses just two weeks after moving in. Very different from north of the river! Providing the cross rail actually happens it will definately boost prices in the area.

I'd recommend the area. Just one word of advice though - the pubs definately seem for locals only!
